The State of Dapr 2025 Report

A comprehensive look into the evolution of Dapr and its impact on modern application development. Whether evaluating Dapr or looking to optimize an existing deployment, this report provides the data and context needed to make informed decisions.

Announcing the State of Dapr 2025 Report: Key Insights & Trends

The State of Dapr 2025 Report provides a comprehensive look into the evolution of Dapr (Distributed Application Runtime) and its impact on modern application development based on the feedback from 202 practitioners. This year’s findings highlight Dapr’s continued expansion, deeper enterprise adoption, and the growing ecosystem that supports cloud-native and distributed applications.

With adoption rates increasing and new capabilities shaping how organizations build and operate distributed systems, the 2025 report is essential reading for engineering leaders, platform teams, and developers who rely on Dapr for mission-critical workloads, or are exploring best-in-class architectures for distributed applications.

You can also join us for a webinar on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025 @ 9:00 AM PDT / 12:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM CET where Marc Duiker & Mark Fussell will discuss the findings and what they mean for the future of the Dapr project.

Dapr adoption continues to expand rapidly

Dapr has cemented itself as a key technology in cloud-native development across multiple disciplines, with significant growth in adoption and real-world production use:

  • 72% of teams now use Dapr for mission-critical applications.
  • 49% of surveyed organizations are running Dapr in production, up from 37% in 2023.
  • Dapr has officially graduated in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), ranking among the top 14 projects out of 173.

Enterprise adoption continues to expand, with over 40,000 organizations engaging with Dapr and leveraging its capabilities for microservices, workflows, and cloud portability.  Dapr is rapidly becoming a key technology for Platform Teams as it helps align the concerns of application developers (for development velocity), Platform Engineers (standardization, resource access management), and SREs/DevOps (observability, resilience).

Why engineering leaders are choosing Dapr

Dapr simplifies distributed application development by abstracting away the complexity of service-to-service communication, state management, and event-driven architectures. The survey data highlights why teams are increasingly standardizing on Dapr:

  • Increases developer efficiency: 60% of teams report saving 30% or more development time.
  • Eliminates boilerplate code: 74% agree Dapr reduces microservices complexity.
  • Enhances multi-cloud portability: Adoption of Dapr outside of Azure has surged, with AWS usage growing from 22% to 38% and on-prem adoption increasing from 21% to 28%.
  • Provides true cloud and vendor independence: Standardized APIs enable flexibility without vendor lock-in.

The most used Dapr APIs in production

Dapr’s core API building blocks are at the heart of its adoption, enabling developers to build reliable, scalable distributed applications with minimal effort. The most widely used building blocks include:

  • Publish & Subscribe Messaging: 86% of teams rely on it for event-driven communication.
  • Service Invocation: 78% use it for seamless inter-service communication.
  • State Management: 74% depend on Dapr’s built-in storage abstraction.
  • Workflow API: Adoption of the Workflow API has significantly increased, allowing teams to streamline automation and orchestration.

What’s next for Dapr?

The 2025 report reveals strong momentum for continued Dapr adoption, with engineering leaders planning to leverage new capabilities and expand their usage:

  • 84% expect their Dapr usage to grow over the next year.
  • 39% plan to implement the Workflow API, leveraging Dapr for advanced automation.
  • 34% are exploring the Jobs API, a new addition to simplify distributed task execution.
  • AI-driven development is on the rise, with the new Conversation API set to extend Dapr’s role in intelligent application design.
